If I’ve linked you to this page it’s probably because we work together or we’re about to, and I’d like you to know how I work and what you can expect from me. I’ll probably make adjustments to this page from time to time and try to make it a living document. Let’s get started! 🤝
Hi, I’m Mike 👋
I live in Bristol in the UK and I’ve worked in tech for about 15 years as I write this in 2025. I began as an intern in a language learning startup while I was living in Argentina. After that I did a bit of freelancing, and then I moved back to the UK and got into web development for a design agency. More recently I’ve been working in software engineering, building SaaS platforms in different industries. A few years ago I made the switch from individual contributor to manager, and I love being at the intersection of people, process, and tech.
What you can expect from me
As your manager:
- I’ll support you, ensuring you’ve got the tools and the context you need to do your best work, and then I’ll get out of your way. I don’t micromanage.
- I’ll prioritise our conversations. Our 1:1s are the most important thing in my calendar, and I’ll move everything else around to accommodate them where I can.
- I’ll work with you on your career plans. We’ll talk about where you’ve come from and where you’re trying to go, and how I can help you get there.
- I’ll give you feedback - the kudos and the challenges - to help you grow and reach your next milestones.
- I’ll level with you. You’ll always know how you’re doing and there won’t be any big surprises at review time.
- I’ll advocate for you when we’re ready to push for your next pay rise or promotion. If you’ll put in the work, I’ll make the best case I can for you.
What I expect from you
- Be open with me. I’ll make sure you’ve got everything I think you need to succeed, but if I miss something or you’re struggling, talk to me! We’ll work it out together.
- Own your growth - invest in yourself, and work with me on setting goals that matter to you.
- Give regular feedback on how things are going - on the team, in the company, and how I’m doing too. That last one is important - it’s how I learn and grow!
Communication
For most things I default to asynchronous communication via Slack (or the company IM of choice), and I’m always happy to jump on a call or book a meeting room for face to face discussions too. For important conversations it’ll be both - face to face with written followups to make sure none of the detail gets lost.
